Lindner Quality Socks

Lindner Socks FAQs

Product Information

How long will my socks last?

Unlike synthetic, mass produced socks, which wear out quickly and lose their shape, Lindner Socks are made by our tenth-generation sock maker, Andrew Lindner, using high-quality natural fibres on traditional, vintage machines before they are individually hand-finished and quality checked.

This commitment to quality and craftsmanship ensures Linder Socks last for years, if properly cared for. For more information on what makes Lindner Socks long-lasting, please see 5 Reasons Why Socks Wear Out. You may also wish to view our YouTube Channel: https://youtu.be/C-lRaB9kpsY

Are the socks itchy?

No. Itchy socks can often be attributed to the fibres used. Starting from the farm, the selection and processing of natural fibres has a huge impact on your feet and the longevity of your socks.  Fibres that are not too fine, but that combine strength and comfort are the best for socks.

At Lindner Socks, we look for a fibre diameter that is strong enough to produce hard wearing socks, yet soft enough that it doesn’t cause itchiness or discomfort. For more information about what goes into our socks, please see Fibres That We Use.

How thick are your socks?

Our socks come in a range of thickness and styles, including: Thick, Full CushionedKnee-High Thick Full-CushionedMedium Thickness RibbedClassic Fine Knit and Ankle Socks in both Ribbed Merino Wool and Cotton.

You can search socks according to thickness, using our Product Filter.

Do you make kids socks?

While our Extra Small (XS) sized socks start at a children’s size 13, we do not currently make kids socks. However, work on a kids’ range is underway – so stay tuned!

To be the first to know when our kids range becomes available, and stay up to date with all our latest news, offers, and events, you can sign up to our ‘Sock Mail’ newsletter (you can subscribe using the field at the bottom of the page) or follow us on Instagram or Facebook.

Do you make pure merino wool socks?

While pure merino wool provides comfort, it allows for little stretch, strength and elasticity in socks. That’s why at Lindner Socks, we add a little nylon to the natural fibres used in our Heritage and Tablelands Collections, to allow for a greater fit and durability.

In socks, nylon’s abrasion resistance is a particularly important attribute. Adding a small amount of nylon can significantly prolong the life of a pair of socks, which means you need to replace your socks less often – a win for your wallet and the environment.

At Lindner Socks we aim to keep the nylon content in good balance with the natural fibre, so that the benefits of both are maximised and we can deliver comfortable, long-lasting socks to our customers.

We are currently investigating a natural and sustainable nylon replacement so that we can move away from synthetics for more comfortable and eco-friendly socks.

In our Luxury Collection, silk is added to the merino wool and alpaca fibres for strength, resulting in exceptional comfort and warmth.

Sizing

How do I work out my size?

In addition to the size charts on each product page, All About Sock Sizes offers a range of tools to work out the right sizing and style for you. If there are any questions we haven’t answered, please contact us directly – we love talking about socks!

What’s the difference in men’s and women’s sizes?

All our sizes are unisex and designed to fit both men and women.

Where do I find European sizes?

All of our sizing charts include European, Australian, US and UK sizes. The size charts can be found on each of our product pages and in All About Sock Sizes.

I am between sizes, which sock size is right for me?

As a general rule, if you are between sizes, for example, you are a women’s 8.5 (Aus/US) or a men’s 6.5 (Aus/US) and are unsure whether a Small (S) or Medium (M) is the right size for you, we recommend selecting the Small (S) if you have a narrow or average width foot. If you have a wide foot, we recommend you go up to a Medium (M), to give a bit of extra room.

To assist you in choosing the right size for you, please see All About Sock Sizes.

I’m trying to work out if I need to order loose tops. How wide do your socks stretch?

For the stretch circumference of all of our socks, as well as sock widths and lengths, please see All About Sock Sizes.

Sock Styles

Which socks go with which shoes?

All About Sock Sizes helps you match the right sock, with the right shoe. We have tried to include as many shoe styles as possible, but if there are any styles we’ve missed, please contact us directly.

Is Alpaca warmer?

Yes. Alpaca has great insulating qualities. In certain breeds of alpaca, the fibres possess a natural crimp like sheep wool. This has the effect of creating tiny air pockets within the spun yarn and the knitted garment which insulates the wearer. Alpaca is a hollow, or partly hollow, fibre. This not only increases its insulating capacity, but also means it is good at wicking moisture and makes it very light-weight when compared to sheep wool. For more information about alpaca fibres, please see Fibres That We Use.

Which are your warmest socks?

Our warmest socks, which have a 5-star warmth rating, are the Laggan in our Luxury Collection and the Roslyn in our Tablelands Collection.

To compare our socks based on warmth and durability, please refer to the product page.

Which ones are your best work socks?

Our Max socks in our Heritage Collection are the style affectionately known to local farmers and tradies as “concrete socks”, as these cushioned socks allow workers to stand comfortably all day on cold, hard concrete without their feet getting sore, cold or tired.

Of course, not everyone works outdoors, so to find the right socks to suit your work shoes and environment, please see Sock Styles.

Do you have bed socks?

While all our socks are comfortable enough to be worn as bed socks, our Max socks in our Heritage Collection, the Roslyn in our Tablelands Collection and the Laggan socks in our Luxury collection rate high on our softness and warmth scales.

Do you have socks for skiing?

If you’re hitting the ski fields, our picks are the knee-high Hermann socks in our Heritage Collection and the knee-high ribbed Binda socks in our Tablelands Collection. The mid-calf ribbed Pejar socks in the Tablelands Collection are also ideal for snowboarding.

To compare our socks, please see Sock Styles.

Do you have socks I can wear with motorcycle boots?

Our knee-high style, which extends up over the calf and up to just below the knee, has long been popular with motorcycle riders. These include the knee-high Hermann socks in our Heritage Collection and the knee-high ribbed Binda socks in our Tablelands Collection.

For help matching the right sock, with the right shoe, please see Sock Styles.

Health Socks (Loose Tops)

Do you have health socks?

Most of our socks are available in loose top. Loose top socks are knitted without incorporating any elastic into the band around the ankle. Loose top socks can assist people with diabetes, swelling, a predisposition to chilblains, limited mobility or poor circulation. For more information about our loose top socks, please see Loose Top Socks. We do not make compression stockings.

Will loose top socks fall down?

We have found over the years that when the correct sock size and style is matched to your shoe type we can keep the sock in place. A little give but not too much stretch, combined with a well-rounded, deep heel made as close to a 90-degree angle as possible, keeps our socks anchored to your feet, so that even with a loose top they won’t fall down.

For more information about our loose top socks, please see Loose Top Socks.

For help choosing the right size for you, please see All About Sock Sizes.

Caring for your Socks, Accessories and Apparel

How do I wash my socks?

Caring properly for your Lindner Socks will ensure they last for years to come. Over-washing or using harsh detergents or softeners can quickly break down natural materials and use of tumble dryers or dry cleaning will cause shrinking, so keep this in mind when caring for your socks. For information on how to care for your socks, as well as our scarves, beanies and apparel, please see Caring for Your Socks.

Do your socks shrink?

Due to the natural crimp in wool fibres, our socks will shrink up to 10% when first washed. We have allowed for this shrinkage with our sizing, which is why your new socks may look a little bigger than expected when they arrive.

After their first wash, our socks should not shrink if they are washed in cold water and air dried in the shade.

If you have accidentally shrunk your socks, you can try to stretch them out while they are still wet. For more information about how to care for your socks, please see Caring for Your Socks.

Why do sock heels wear out?

At Lindner Socks we believe the most important part of a sock is the heel. It anchors the sock to the shape of your foot and keeps it where it should be. If the heel is properly formed at the right angle, then there is no need for stretchy synthetics to cling on to your foot and ankle. Many modern socks are formed with a heel angle of 120 degrees. Lindner Socks are constructed with a heel angle of about 100 degrees, to keep them well-fitted to your feet.

Modern, mass production of socks has become very time-efficient, however following the angles of your feet and legs doesn’t seem to be high on the priority list in many cases. The L-shape from leg to foot is a rare thing, but when you start walking and your socks start to get eaten by your shoes, you can be assured the heel shape has a lot to answer for.

The key to getting socks to last longer is to minimise movement. More movement means more friction, which has potential to cause blisters, and it also starts to pull fibres apart. A well-shaped heel is a major factor in minimising movement, as it effectively anchors socks into place on your feet. For more information on why our traditional sock making techniques are superior to mass production, please see 5 Reasons Why Socks Wear Out.
